Cervical disc arthroplasty is a surgical artificial disc replacement procedure that replaces a deteriorated or damaged intervertebral disc. The purpose of the surgery is to restore motion to the neck.
This surgery is done on the cervical spine, or neck, to treat conditions due to disc herniation and to preserve and regain mobility. The conditions include but are not limited to cervical radiculopathy and nerve pain in the arm, also known as arm brachialgia.
Cervical disc arthroplasty is similar to Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF), however instead of fusing the adjacent vertebrae, an artificial disc or implant is inserted into the disc space.
Why Cervical Disc Arthroplasty?
This procedure is considered if the patient has damaged or weakened cervical discs due to genetics, aging, or normal wear and tear, muscle numbness, weakness, lack of coordination, and muscle spasms.
Recovery
Most patients tolerate this procedure and find relief from the symptoms caused by nerve compression. After 1-2 days following surgery, the patient can go home. During the recovery, the patient may have a variety of symptoms, from neck pain to throat pain, but they will improve in just a few short weeks.
Patients should avoid strenuous work such as heavy lifting, physical exertion and contact sports for 6-12 weeks post-operation.
