Laminoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed specifically on the neck vertebrae, or the cervical spine, which decompresses or lessens pressure around the nerves and spinal canal. The lamina, which is a bone protecting the spinal canal, is opened by creating a hinge on one side and the other is propped open by a small plate or a bone strut. Laminoplasty is different from a laminotomy. In a laminotomy, the lamina is removed. Laminoplasty is a repositioning or reshaping of the lamina.
Why Laminoplasty?
When a patient has spinal stenosis, a laminoplasty may be required. Stenosis is a condition which may occur at any part of the back or neck. Conditions which cause spinal stenosis could be a degenerative arthritis in the spine, called spondylosis, bulging and/or degenerating discs, an enlarged ligament, tumor or cyst, congenital problems such as dwarfism, or a skeletal disease like Paget disease.
If you have pain in the shoulders, arms and hands, a feeling of weakness, numbness and tingling in the neck, pain in the neck, or problems in bladder or bowel functions, you may be experiencing Spinal Stenosis.
Laminoplasty Procedure
Done under general anesthesia, laminoplasty surgery is concentrated to the neck region of the spine. The surgeon will cut one side of the cervical vertebrae to create the necessary hinge. The surgeon will then make a cut through the other side of the cervical vertebrae to create enough room for the bones to open. He/she will then use small wedges of bone to prop the bone door open, providing relief to the spinal column.
In some instances, the surgeon may also depressurize the nerve roots by the means of a foraminotomy. The foraminotomy will enlarge the foramina, or the tunnels that the roots exit the spinal cord.
Post-surgery
While the duration of the procedure, downtime, and recovery vary from patient to patient, most patients are able to get out of bed within a couple of hours. Medication will be prescribed to help with discomfort of limited motion. Your doctor may determine the best plan of action is to wear a neck collar during your recovery.
