Lumbar Discectomy

Lumbar Discectomy

Lumbar Discectomy

A lumbar discectomy is an operation which removes a herniated or degenerative disk from the lower back (lumbar) that causes discomfort due to the disc pressing on the spinal cord or on a nerve ending. Discectomy is usually recommended when medication and/or physical therapy prove to be ineffective or when the patient shows signs of nerve damage.

The Surgery

This procedure is done under general anesthesia and usually takes between 1-2 hours.

During the surgery, the surgeon reaches the damaged disc from the posterior or back of the spine. Removing part of the lamina, or the protective bone outside of the spinal canal, the surgeon can then remove the disc to alleviate pressure on the spine.

An alternative option is a microendoscopic discectomy, which is a minimally invasive technique. A surgeon inserts a small tube through the incision, between the vertebrae and into the space with the damaged disc. Through the tube, the physician will use tiny instruments and a laser to remove part of the disc.

A fusion may be necessary to stabilize the spine, which can be done at the same time as the discectomy.

Post-operation

Patients can expect to stay the night for observation in the hospital and will be prescribed medication to manage the pain and discomfort. Slowly, normal activities like exercise can be resumed with caution. Recovery times will vary from patient to patient and case to case.
