Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a painful condition where the nerves along the spine are pressured due to a narrowing of the space around the spine. While it usually affects the neck, or cervical region, it also occurs in the lower back, or lumbar.

Stenosis Symptoms

The signs of cervical stenosis, or stenosis in the neck, could include symptoms such as neck pain, numbness, tingling, cramping or weakness in the appendages, difficulty with basic movements like walking and balancing, bowel and bladder dysfunctions, such as urinary urgency or incontinence.

Spinal Stenosis Causes

Mostly occurring at birth, spinal stenosis is the development of a small spinal canal. This may be due to overgrowth of bones, spinal injuries, tumors, herniated disks, or thickened ligaments.

Treatment & Surgery

While pain relievers, opioids, antidepressants, and anti-seizure drugs may be a viable option to treat spinal stenosis, surgery may be required. It is dependent upon the unique needs of the patient. Our team of expert physicians will work with you to come up with a plan to get you back on your feet and enjoying your life.

Prior to having surgery, our doctors may order some blood assessments to understand the holistic view of the patient’s health.

The surgical procedures for the management of spinal stenosis include:

Laminotomy

This procedure removes part of the lamina, or the roof of the spinal canal that provides support and protection for the backside of the spinal cord. The removed piece is only big enough to alleviate the pressure.

Laminoplasty

Laminoplasty is a procedure done only on the spinal bones in the neck. It increases the space inside the spinal canal by creating a hinge on the lamina. Metal hardware will then bridge the gap on the opened section of the spine.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

The least invasive surgery is done on the bone and lamina to decrease the amount of damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.

POST-SURGERY

Because these procedures are minimally invasive, most patients will return home the same day as the surgery. To alleviate pain, medication will be prescribed.  Within a few weeks most patients will resume normal activity, but of course this is dependent upon the surgery and the individual.
