Cervical spine (neck) treatment

When a patient is experiencing Cervical spine pain, or pain in the neck, it can be debilitating and keep them from living life to the fullest. With a wide variety of options for treatment available, it can be overwhelming to select the right path.

The neck, or cervical spine is the spinal column which consists of 7 bones, also known as vertebrae. These vertebrae extend from the bottom of the skull to the upper torso and are separated from one another by the intervertebral discs which serve as shock absorbers, which allows the spine to move giving us full range of motion. Inflammation is the most common cause of pain, stiffness, or pain, but other abnormalities or injuries can also be a cause for cervical spine treatment.

At Bonex Klinik, innovative treatment plans are designed specific to cervical spine and neck treatment that addresses the source of pain. Our expert team of clinic staff is able to successfully explore which options of treatment are best for you after a thorough assessment.
Using top-tier technology, Bonex Klinik doctors are able to address the source of pain and create a simple to understand patient care plan getting you back to life as soon as possible.

Common Causes

There are several common causes of neck pain. As people age, it is natural that our joints weaken over time. Deterioration of cartilage between the discs can lead to bone spurs, a condition known as Osteoarthritis. When a person experiences osteoarthritis and/or bone spurs, it can put tension on the spinal cord and compress the nerves. When we have injuries like whiplash, it can cause the soft tissues of the neck to strain, which also induces pain.

There are a variety of diseases which cause pain in the cervical spine: fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, spinal stenosis, spondylosis, and herniated cervical disc to name a few.

Step 1: Diagnostic Process

At Bonex Klinik, you will find our specialists are well-versed and ready to identify the cause of your cervical spine pain and address it from the source. Your doctor will thoroughly review your medical history, perform a physical, and use a combination of tests and imaging to identify the best treatment plan. Some tests could include x-rays, blood tests, CT/MRIs, electromyography, and lumbar puncture. The best treatment plan starts with an accurate diagnosis, and the Bonex team is determined to get you back to living your life.

Step 2: Treatment Plan

After a comprehensive diagnosis, your doctor will collaborate with you to determine the best course of action for your treatment plan. While mild to moderate neck discomfort will usually respond to self-care within a couple of weeks, more extreme pain and complicated diagnosis can require anything from medication such as muscle relaxers, pain medication, physical therapy to gain mobility, traction therapy to build the muscles, or short-term immobility with a brace to alleviate pain.

Step 3: Surgery

After exhausting all non-invasive options available, neck surgery may be considered if the patient is still experiencing pain. Surgical procedures at Bonex Klinik include anterior cervical discectomy, which is the most common surgery to relieve a nerve-pinching herniated disc. This procedure involves removing the herniated disc along with any bone spurs putting pressure on the nerves and causing pain. The space is refilled by bone or other material and fuses the vertebrae together.

For patients experiencing spinal stenosis, a laminoplasty may be considered. This procedure creates more space within the spinal canal for the spinal cord. The surgeon reconstructs the vertebral lamina to enlarge the canal.

When a patient has vertebrae grinding against each other, a cervical spinal fusion may be the best option. When the disc between the vertebrae is worn down or herniated, surgeons will use a metal implant or bone graft to re-join them together.

Every case is different and uniquely tailored to your needs. The duration of the procedure, downtime, and recovery are dependent on a case by case basis.
