Kyphosis, also known as a hunchback , is the curvature of the back at T5-12 >40°. Hyperkyphosis can occur at any age, with some conditions seen in infants or children due to malformation of the spine or wedging of the spinal bones over time. In some cases, Kyphosis has even been associated with inappropriate posture. Mild hyperkyphosis (40-50°) causes few problems, but moderate (50-75°) and severe (>75°) can cause chronic pain, spinal problems and be disfiguring.
Risk Factors
Genetics are the most common risk, and scoliosis generally develops during the period of adolescence. Girls have a higher risk than boys of developing Kyphosis. Signs and symptoms include an exaggerated rounding of the back.
Diagnosis
Your specialist at Bonex Klinik will begin with a physical exam of the child and check for the spinal and body curves using a scoliometer. He/She will test muscle strength, sensation and reflexes. X-Rays called scoliograms may be necessary to assess the spinal curvature. When the deformity is confirmed or if the doctor needs to investigate an underlying condition, he/she may advise for an MRI and/or CT scan.
Treatment:
Milder cases of deformities will include physical therapies and braces, while more severe cases of spinal deformities may require different surgical techniques. One new procedure uses a magnetic growing rods device for early-onset scoliosis, anterior, posterior or combined spinal approaches for spinal correction and fixation, among others.
