What Is A Laminotomy

Laminotomy is a surgery to remove a piece of the lamina and adjacent ligaments. This procedure is done to decompress a nerve, which might be the cause of neck or back pain.

The lamina supports and protects the spinal canal, which is where the spinal cord travels through the center of the vertebrae in the spinal canal. Conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated disc, bulging disc, degenerative disc disease and arthritis of the spine can compress or put pressure on the spinal cord causing pain, numbness and weakness in the arms and legs.

When surgeons remove part of the lamina, it creates more space for the nerves and spinal cord to move freely.

Types Of Laminotomy

There are a variety of laminotomy procedures, including but not limited to:

CERVICAL LAMINOTOMY: partial removal of the lamina near the neck.
LUMBAR LAMINOTOMY: partial removal of the lamina in the lumbar spine, or lower back.
SACRAL LAMINOTOMY: partial removal of the lamina in the sacral spine, or in the back between the pelvis or hips.
THORACIC LAMINOTOMY: partial removal of the lamina in the thoracic spine or in the middle part of the back.
LAMINOTOMY PROCEDURE

The Laminotomy can be performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as:

FORAMINOTOMY: decompression to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves.
DISCECTOMY: decompression to remove part or all of damaged intervertebral discs.
SPINAL FUSION: fusion to connect two or more vertebrae to stabilize the spine.

LAMINOTOMY CAN BE PERFORMED USING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TECHNIQUES:

MICROLAMINOTOMY: minimally invasive, uses an arthroscope (a very small camera with a light that transmits interior body pictures to a screen that is viewed by the neurosurgeon while performing the surgery.) This technique causes little to no damage to the surrounding tissues and organs, creating a shorter recovery time with less pain.
OPEN SURGERY: larger incision in the back depending on the number of affected vertebrae. This direct technique allows the surgeon to directly view and access the target area.

Post Operation:

With a Microlaminotomy, the procedure can be treated as out-patient as the surgery is minimally invasive. With the open surgery, it may require the patient to stay in hospital for a couple of days for observation. Medication to manage discomfort during the recovery process will be prescribed and patients are advised to return to normal activities gradually. A full recovery can be expected after 4-6 weeks, but recovery times will vary from case to case..
