Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine which develops in children just before and during puberty. This is a three-dimensional spine deformity characterized by side (>10°) and rotational curvature of the spine. One of the most common forms of Scoliosis is called adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), which is genetic and affects 3% of children under the age of 16 and usually becomes evident in the early adolescence. Scoliosis types that are less common are caused by cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, neurological diseases, birth defects, or spinal injuries.

Signs And Symptoms

The earliest sign will be a change in the appearance of the child. The shoulders will become uneven, and one may become more prominent than the other. You may notice the waist becoming uneven with one hip sitting higher than the other. Sometimes the spine will twist, causing a rib on one side to stick out and causing discomfort for the child.

Conservative Treatment:

Effective treatment will reduce the risk of a curve progressing. More significant deformities may benefit from surgery before the deformity progresses. The most common non-surgical solution is brace treatment for mild to moderate scoliosis (25-40°). There are certain exercises used that can be guided by the physiotherapy and rehabilitation team that will be helpful as well.

Surgical Treatment:

More severe cases of scoliosis can be treated through different surgical techniques, including the use of the new magnetic growing rods device for early-onset scoliosis, anterior, posterior or combined spinal approaches for spinal correction and fixation, among others. The sooner detected, the better the outcome will be.
